Borrow library ebooks!

Did you receive a new Kindle, Nook, iPad, or Kobo this holiday season? You may be wondering if library ebooks are available for checkout/download.

The answer is "yes!" However, depending on the device you have, the vendor platform on which the ebook resides, and the publisher, the process may be more or less complex - and sometimes an ebook download just isn't possible. We want this process to be as intuitive and straightforward as possible for you, and we are keeping abreast of current ebook developments. They come fast and furious, so what frustrates today may be possible tomorrow.

All ebooks provided by Musselman Library are in our catalog, MUSCAT - so you can search for them in the same way you search for any library book here. Many of our ebooks are downloadable (though vendor platform and publisher licenses determine this, not librarians!). Most of Musselman Library's ebooks reside on the ebrary platform, and most of them are downloadable in either pdf or epub format. [Note that if you want text to "flow" on your device, you should choose the non-proprietary epub format, only available on non-Kindle devices.] See here for more information about ebrary downloads, and please contact a reference librarian if you have questions and/or feedback.

We know many of you are reading ebooks for "fun" rather than for class or work. Larger collections of recreational ebooks are available from public libraries. If you are a resident* of Adams County, PA, and have a library card from the Adams County Library System (ACLS), you have two great options:

Arts and crafts during the fall finals study break in Musselman Library.

Congratulations on another semester done! It's been a wild finals week in the library, and we hope we were able to do our part to make your studying go as well as possible--whether that be with a comfortable study nook, coffee and tea at midnight, or a snack during the finals study break. When the library is empty and the printers are no longer humming, we'll certainly miss you all.

If, however, you're going to be hanging around a little while longer in Gettysburg, feel free to swing by and load up on some books to read over the break. If you have a long drive, don't forget the audiobooks on the ground floor in front of the DVD section. Check our hours to see when we'll be open.

Finals Week at Musselman Library

It's finals week! For many of you the library becomes a second home as you buckle down to study for exams and finish up your papers. And we're ready for you! The library will be open 24 hours until 5:00pm on Saturday, 12/17.

Finals week also means CUPCAKES! Don't forget to come to the study break tonight, 8 - 10pm in Room 018. Enjoy a break from the books with some cupcakes, crafts and games.

Need to talk to a librarian? The hours for the reference desk this week are:

Take a STUDY BREAK at the library!

Do finals have you stressed out? Need to relax and unwind? Do you love games, crafts and CUPCAKES?

If you said yes to any of these questions check out the Musselman Library Study Break on Monday December 12 in Room 018 from 8-10PM. In addition to snacks and drinks, there will be a variety of different activities including cupcake decorating, Wii games, boards games, card making, snowflake making, origami and the creation of a Lego city! The origami and Lego creations will be displayed on the main floor till the end of finals week so students and staff can vote for their favorite. The winner in each category will receive an awesome prize after the break!

Iraqi Women’s Rights lecture coming soon!

Lecture: Iraqi Women’s Rights, Gender-Based Violence and the Occupation of Iraq
by Nadje Al-Ali

Monday, December 5 at 4 p.m.

Nadje Al-Ali has written extensively on women and the gender-based effects of political repression, human rights violations, military action, sanctions and occupation on women in Iraq and Iraqi women abroad. An anthropologist of German-Iraqi origin, Al-Ali is the author of numerous books. Her most recent titles include Women and War in the Middle East: Transnational Perspectives (co-editor, Zed Books, 2009) and What Kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation in Iraq (co-author, University of California Press, 2009) and Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present (2007, Zed Books). She is Professor of Gender Studies and Chair of the Centre for Gender Studies, at University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. A book signing will follow the lecture.

This lecture is part of Conflict and Resistance in the Middle East, a reading, film, and lecture series focused on life during conflict in the Middle East. All events are free and open to the public.

You can try the scanner outside the Browsing Room

Have you noticed the new scanner by the Browsing Room? Musselman Library is trying out a BookScan station until mid-November, and we want to have your feedback. Let us know if you think we should by a machine for the library.

Rather than photocopying a journal article or class notes, help us test it out. Yo can use the scanner and its touchscreen monitor to quickly scan documents and then save them as a PDF to your USB drive or as an attachment (a helpful way to share an article with classmate during a group assignment!).

Musselman Library is offering two internships—one in the reference and instruction department, and one in music—to a Gettysburg College student during the spring semester.

Are you a music major or minor who is interested in learning about music in libraries? Students considering a career in the field, or interested in learning more about music librarianship, are encouraged to apply for the Esther Kenyon Fortenbaugh Internship in Musselman Library's Music Department. This internship offers a great opportunity to work with the many different types of music resources available in the library, including audio-visual materials, printed music, databases and digital collections, and books about music.

Both internships are for the Spring Semester 2012 (6-8 hours/week, $8.50/hour).Deadline for applications is Sunday, November 13, 2011. You can find the applications here:

Fifty years ago this fall, Carl Arnold Hanson became the 10^th president of Gettysburg College, serving from 1961-1977. His long administration saw the College through some interesting times. There are many great stories to tell.

Please join President Janet Riggs ’77, as well as Professor Emerita Mary Margaret Stewart and Professor Ken Mott, who will share stories from the Hanson years.

Junior history majors Melissa Dorrance ‘13, J.J. Beck ‘13 and Sam Larson ‘13 will comment on their research about student life during his presidency.

New Exhibition: Colors of Singapore

The main stairwell is looking a little brighter in Musselman Library with the arrival of the Colors of Singapore photography exhibition. During the summer, Joseph Miller '13, Falon Deimler '13 and Alice Wolfkill '12 accompanied Professor VoonChin Phua on a research trip to Singapore. Their photographs, inspired by the country's vibrant colors and culture, are on display in the Library stairwell.

Falon Deimler '13 writes, "One of the four 'Asian Tigers' or economic strongholds of Asia, Singapore is a young and highly modernized island nation. Its citizens are proud of the country's economic successes and enjoy all of the benefits of its innovative, competitive, and sophisticated society. Despite Singapore's emergence as an economic power, it maintains an unmistakably vibrant character through the fusion of its modernism with the rich cultural heritage of its people. This exhibit aims to demonstrate the 'Colors of Singapore,' of its architecture as well as its people, in order to capture and share the brilliance of a venture through the nation's most frequented tourist attractions, as well as its captivating local sights."

The Colors of Singapore exhibition will run through December 16, 2011 in the Musselman Library main stairwell.

Banned Books Week!

Feel like reading a dangerous book? Come to Musselman Library during Banned Books Week, September 24 through October 1, and check out the banned books display to discover which books have been considered so dangerous or offensive that people have tried to remove them from libraries and schools across the country.

This display will feature banned books and highlight the reasons given for wanting these books off the shelves. Stop by to learn which book was condemned because it would "corrupt the minds of young people", or to find a book that is "blasphemous and undermines morality". And, after you visit the display, why not also check out one of these banned books and celebrate your freedom to read!

Look for this display starting Friday evening, on the main floor of Musselman Library, where it will remain through the following week.

Late for Tea at the Deer Palace

Please join us tomorrow, September 13^th, at 7PM in the Pennsylvania Hall Lyceum for a discussion of the book Late for Tea at the Deer Palace, by Tamara Chalabi. The discussion will be led by Professor Karen Pinto, of the history department, and is the premier event in the “Conflict and Resistance in the Middle East” series.

In Late for Tea, Chalabi looks at the modern history of Iraq through the story of her own family, who played a significant political role in Iraq since the time of the Ottoman Empire. She is the daughter of Ahmed Chalabi, the controversial Iraqi politician and former exile who helped the U.S. plan the 2003 invasion and overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Weaving historical fact with stories from her own family history, Chalabi offers an engaging portrait of Middle Eastern family life and social history.

Welcome back, students!

If you've been to the library this semester, you might have noticed that we made some changes to the main floor during the summer.

We added round tables around the pillars, which is where the lab computers are located. Some of these tables have open spaces where you can do your work on your own computer, complete with easier access to electrical outlets.

The reference collection has moved. Instead of being in the middle of the floor, the reference stacks are now against the walls. It really opens up the space. I bet you didn't know we have a patio back there, did you?

Can't find the printer? Don't worry! It's still nearby, under the big painting at the end of the circulation desk. You'll find staplers and a three-hole punch there, too.

Mellon Research

While many college students are spending the summer months traveling, relaxing at the beach, or trying to earn some cash for the coming school year, 12 Gettysburg College students are using their break to do research. Thanks to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, these students are able to participate in a highly selective faculty-mentored student research program.

Lauren Roedner is one of the Mellon Scholars, and she has hit the ground running with her research. After using some of the library’s online databases, she identified nearly a hundred resources to consult. She found many newspaper and journal articles related to her research topic, accessed a couple of 1865 titles that have been digitized and made freely available online, and today she checked out over 40 books from Musselman Library! She was able to lug her research bounty away with a carry-on sized suitcase, a shoulder bag, and her two hands.

Musselman Library opened its doors on April 22, 1981 with a campus book walk. Over the course of five hours, 1350 student, staff, and faculty volunteers lined up to move the library’s collection from Schmucker Library across campus into the new building.

We won't be doing heavy lifting this year, but we will have cupcakes and drinks, a 1980s trivia game with prizes for the true 1980s trivia buff, and a photo booth where you can have you picture taken with some iconic 1980s hair. Feeling like Farrah, anyone?

In honor of Valentine's Day, Musselman Library conducted a survey in the CUB on Monday, asking students to select a valentine and share their thoughts about the library's collections, space, and services. 124 students participated and their appreciation ranged from free hot chocolate at midnight to favorite spaces and helpful staff.

Everyone who participated in the survey was entered in a drawing for one of three iTunes gift cards. Laura Banti ’11, Darnell McWhorter ’13 and Taylor Moscatiello ’14 were the lucky winners. See what they said about the library below.

Barbara Holley Internship

Musselman Library is looking for motivated and responsible individual who is interested in librarianship for the 2011-2012 Barbara Holley Internship.
The internship is intended for a recent college graduate (or one who will graduate this spring) interested in pursuing a career in information science, librarianship, or archives and records management.
This position allows the intern to work closely with many departments in the library (Special Collections, Reference, and User Services, just to name a few!), as well as organize student activities like Final Study break.

You may have noticed Audrey Schwinn '11 and Sierra Green '11 working at the reference desk or up in Special Collections. They are the Esther Kenyon Fortenbaugh interns for spring semester 2011.

Audrey Schwinn ’11 will be interning in Reference & Instruction, where she will be working on the reference desk, learning the extensive databases and print resources available in the collection, assisting with instruction sessions, and supporting special events.

Sierra Green ’11 will be interning in Special Collections, where she will assist in processing new accessions, providing reference service to patrons, and working on a project of her own design.

Finals are here, accompanied by long hours of studying and paper writing, and the stress and lack of sleep that goes along with it!

Emerge from the chaos and take a breather at Musselman Library's Finals Study Break this Monday, December 13th from 8:00 to 10:00pm in Room 18 (ground floor) of the library.

There will be plenty of games to help you unwind, including UNO, Life, Candy Land and Twister. For those of you who want to groove, Just Dance 2 on the Wii will be available. And for the artists there will be a "Trick My Cupcake" competition, where you can decorate cupcakes with frosting, sprinkles and the like... and then enjoy your tasty masterpieces!

In addition to a TON of cupcakes, there will be fruit, veggies and other homemade goodies (courtesy of the library staff) for your enjoyment. But be warned - the food often disappears quickly.

When Musselman is full…

Lots of students love to study in Musselman Library. We’ve got quiet spaces (2nd, 3rd, 4th floors), we’ve got loudish places (main and ground). We’ve got individual tables and carrels, we’ve got big tables. We’ve got rooms with technology and computer labs. We have soft lounge-y chairs and couches.

We have a space to suit almost everybody – but we don’t have enough space for everybody all at the same time. Especially around the finals crunch.

What’s a studious student to do? Here are some alternate study spaces around campus:

Library Events Feature Music and Art

On Tuesday, November 30, the Gettysburg College Camerata and Women's Choir will be performing during Notes at Noon in the library apse.

On Wednesday, December 1, Visual Arts Instructor John Kovaleski will talk about Unbound, his artwork that incorporates pages from discarded library books and journals. This brown bag lunch will take place at noon in library room 018.

We are happy to announce that the fourth floor has been reopened. You can rediscover your favorite quiet study space, and retrieve (most of) your own books in call numbers Q-Z.

One exception: there are still a few books at the end of the Q-Z range that are now inside a locked cage. These will be shifted out of the cage and into the self-service stacks area as soon as possible. If you need something that is in the cage, please ask at the circulate desk. We will retrieve these books for you.

Imagine going to the library today and being told that you are not allowed to read Harry Potter, To Kill A Mockingbird or even The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These are just a few of the books that were banned by schools, bookstores and libraries across the country in 2009.

Come to Musselman Library to celebrate your freedom to read during Banned Book Week, September 27th-October 1st. Visit the display of banned books on the main floor and check out a banned or challenged book to see what the fuss is all about! Feel free to browse the complete list of books banned in 2009 – you will be shocked to see what’s on there! Also on Wednesday, September 29th from 1 to 3 p.m. stop by the main floor to make your own button to show your support for reading banned books.

Introducing Clint!

Our newest addition to the Reference & Instruction team here at Musselman Library is Clint Baugess. You may bump into Clint at the reference desk or during a research instruction session with your class. Clint is also the liaison librarian for the Psychology department.

Clint recently completed his M.L.S. at Indiana University. His BA is from The College of Wooster in Ohio, so he is already very familiar with the liberal arts college environment.

We’re awfully happy to have him here. Clearly he is happy about being here, too. Welcome, Clint!

Looking for a Place to Study?

Looking for a good place to study in the library? There are a variety of spaces to consider, depending on the kind of atmosphere you're looking for. Here are a few you might not know about.

For quiet studying, check out the new quiet study space on the second floor near the elevators.

If you have group work, go down to the ground floor, where there are group study rooms. These spaces have flat panel screens for DVD viewing or laptop hook-up, white boards, and dry erase markers, making them excellent for collaborating with your classmates.

Need a computer? Check room 20 on the ground floor of the library. When it's not being used as a library classroom, it's open for you to use. A schedule of classes taking place in that room is posted by the door daily.

While You Were Gone

Musselman Library was very busy this summer while you were away. In addition to our regular summer duties, three major projects were underway during the summer months.

Rebricking of Library Steps. After Alumni Weekend in June the library steps facing Stine Lake were removed and replaced with new brick. Enjoy the freedom of walking on non-eroding brick steps!

New Study Space. You asked, we listened. After hearing a reoccurring request for “silent” study space, we turned part of the 2nd floor into a quiet room. Feel free to take advantage of this new study space on the north side of the 2nd floor – but please remember to be SILENT!

Special Collections Renovation. After mitigating the mold outbreak in Special Collections that was discovered last spring, the 4th floor experienced some renovation this summer which included a new HVAC system, flooring and paint that will help ensure that the mold is truly gone.

The bad news? Special Collections and the 4th floor are not quite ready, and will be closed until October. If you need a book on the 4th floor (call numbers Q-Z) please talk to someone at the Circulation Desk about having a staff member retrieve it for you.

Calling All EZ-Borrow Books!

Starting June 1 2010, Musselman Library will no longer be offering the EZ Borrow loan service.

We currently run the EZ Borrow system in addition to interlibrary loan (meaning, we have been using two methods for requesting books from other institutions). In order to streamline the requesting process and provide better service, we will be using our Illiad interlibrary loan system for all book and article requests.

We ask for your assistance by returning any EZ Borrow books that you have checked out by Tuesday, June 1st. You can identify EZ Borrow books by the blue paper band wrapped around the cover. Since we are withdrawing from this service, we unfortunately cannot renew any EZ Borrow titles that you currently have checked out.

Unbound in the library stairwell

Check out our latest stairwell exhibit: "Unbound." The exhibit "Unbound" is by John Kovaleski, cartoonist and Instructor of Art and Film at Gettysburg College. Using books and journals withdrawn from Musselman Library's collection, Kovaleski takes individual pages and highlights a word, then uses that word as inspiration for a drawing on that page. The individual pages are then strung together and hung down the center of Musselman Library's five-floor stairwell.

One such banner is already hanging, and Kovaleski expects to hang two others later in the semester. According to Kovaleski, "Unbound began as a simple exercise in using used books as sketchbooks and the words on the pages as the subject of the drawings, thus altering their identity. When I began using discarded bound journals the change in identity became even more important since they'd been rendered useless in this electronic age. The next logical step was to free them from their bindings and install the pages in a familiar setting but in a different context."

Svitanya brings Eastern European folk music to Musselman Library

Our Notes at Noon concert series returns on March 29th with a performance by Svitanya, a women's vocal ensemble specializing in Eastern European folk music. Based in the Philadelphia area, the group performs traditional and modern arrangements of folk songs drawn from across Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Bulgaria, Russia, Georgia, Lithuania, and Macedonia. Svitanya - which means "the light at sunrise" in Ukrainian and Croatian - also performs original music composed in the folk tradition, and accompanies many of the songs with guitar, tambourin, doumbek, and gaida, a Macedonian bagpipe. The concert is sponsored by the Friends of Musselman Library and the Adams County Arts Council, and is free and open to the public.

Caffeine Fix in the Library

Exciting news from Musselman Library and Dining Services! You no longer have to walk across campus in the rain to get your cup of joe – there is now coffee in the library 24 hours a day!

To get your local caffeine fix, just visit the new coffee machine on the main floor of Musselman Library (next to the Circulation Desk). Prices range from 50 cents for hot water, to $1.00 for regular coffee, up to $1.50 for specialty drinks (vanilla coffee, café latte, mochaccino, etc.).

Currently, the machine only uses vending dollars off your Gettysburg College ID card (NOT declining dollars). If you would like to add vending dollars to your ID card, visit the ID card machines next to the photocopiers on main and ground floor of Musselman Library (this money also works for making photocopies and laundry).

For anyone visiting campus that may not have a Gettysburg College ID card, there are GETT cards available in the office supply vending machine pre-loaded with $5.

Celebration of College Authors

Internship Opportunity

Musselman Library is searching for a motivated and responsible individual to serve as its Barbara Holley Library Intern. This one year, paid position with benefits allows the Intern to work closely with several Library Departments and gain valuable experience in many aspects of library operations, procedures, and management.

The internship is intended for a recent college graduate (or one who will graduate this spring) interested in pursuing a career in information science, librarianship, or archives and records management. Previous interns have gone on to complete graduate degrees in library and information studies and are now working as information professionals.

Musselman Library is buzzing with the noise of drills and saws this week. What’s going on?

On the main floor, watch for an exciting development related to this new plumbing: Hmmm, what do you think this could be? I’m not telling, but you’re going to LOVE it!

And outside the main entrance, you’ve been dealing with hazards like these for years (due to failing mortar): Which means that now it’s time for something more extreme, like this: The mortar and concrete are being repaired and the steps will be rebricked. Hopefully this project will be done in time for spring sunshine, when everyone wants to hang out on the library patio to study (or not).

New Improved Group Study Rooms!

Come enjoy the newly renovated group study rooms on the ground floor of Musselman Library! Room 005 contains 4 comfy green chairs with tablet arms; rooms 003 and 004 have round tables with 4 chairs.All rooms also include flat panel screens for DVD viewing or laptop hook-up, white boards, dry erase markers, and eraser.

Rooms 003 and 004 are reserveable! Groups may reserve the space for up to 4 hours at a time using the sign-up sheet located on the wall outside the room. New sign-up sheets are made available on Sundays so you can sign up for times throughout the coming week.

Finals Week at Musselman Library

It's Finals Week here at Gettysburg College. If you need to spend some long hours studying, the Library's doors are open 24 hours. In fact, the Library will be open straight through Saturday, December 19th, at which time it will close at 5pm.

Drop by our Semi-Annual Study Break on December 14th (the Monday of finals week) from 8 - 10 p.m. in Library room 18. You can eat some homemade cookies—there will be hundreds—color some holiday and library themed coloring pages, and play games.

You can also take part in the third annual “Trick My Book Truck” competition. This is a great opportunity to be a kid again, get creative, and help us to revitalize some of our drab and shabby book carts!

It is that time of year where citations abound. Not familiar with the citation style your professor requires? No need to worry! Musselman Library has copies of the major citation style guides including APA, MLA, Turabian and Chicago. Just stop by the Reference Desk and the librarian on duty will be happy to help you!

There are also some great citation formatters available online. Visit the Library homepage and click on Citation Guides to find the citation tool that’s right for you!

Try out a quick and dirty formatter like SourceAid or a power tool like RefWorks. Either one will save you time (and your sanity) when you need to produce a bibliography. Feel free to ask a librarian for a quick tour to get you started.

Do you enjoy searching for information and helping people find exactly what they need? Are you contemplating a career in libraries or information science and want to gain some experience?

Then you should consider applying for the Esther Kenyon Fortenbaugh Internship in the Reference & Instruction Department at Musselman Library! This internship provides a great opportunity to learn what it’s like to be a librarian or information specialist.

Students in any major are eligible to apply. The internship is for the Spring Semester 2010 (6-8 hours/week, $8.00/hour). Deadline for applications is 5:00 pm, Monday, November 9, 2009.

Hours for Reading Days

Musselman Library will be open this weekend … just not as many hours as normal. Here’s our schedule:

Friday, 10/9 – close at 8 pm
Saturday, 10/10 – open 10 am to 6 pm
Sunday, 10/11 – open 10 am to 6 pm
Monday, 10/12 – open 8 am to 11 pm
Tuesday, 10/13 – open 8 am … resume 24-hour schedule

That’s right, we’re open all night long on Tuesday 10/13.

The Reference Desk closes Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm and reopens on Wednesday morning at 9:00 am. If you need to consult with a librarian about your research, stop by room 102 on the main floor or ask for a reference librarian at the circulation desk. The friendly students there can locate someone to help you. Or, try using our email reference form. Most of the reference department is away on Monday, 10/12, but we’ll be around on Tuesday to assist you.

Have a restful and/or productive break, whichever one you need the most!

Audiobooks at Musselman Library

Just inside the entrance to Musselman Library, you’ll find a double-sided display of audiobooks – perfect for summertime listening!

Most of our audiobooks are on CD.

However, we have something new to share with you: a growing number of our audiobooks are on a preloaded mp3 device called a Playaway. Check out the Playaway, plug in your own headphones, and start listening. The device automatically bookmarks so you can turn it off and resume listening later. You can also connect the Playaway to speakers or your car speakers (with the appropriate cable).

If you are browsing at the shelf, you’ll know the Playaway titles by their packaging – they are housed in a VHS-sized box. To find the Playaway titles in MUSCAT, search on keyword “playaway.” Currently there are 15 Playaway audiobooks in the library and more coming soon.

Let us know what you think about this new format! In the future, we would love to offer downloadable audiobooks. Audible.com has a great platform for audio downloads, but currently they do not offer institutional subscriptions. We will keep an eye on this company.

Alumni Weekend is just a week away! If you’re planning on visiting campus that weekend, make sure you stop by the library and check out the many exhibits that are on display. The current exhibit series is titled Discover Other Worlds and includes photographs, maps, wood carvings, and more.

On the Main Floor you will find:

Life in Miniature: Wood Carvings from Brienz – Wood carvings depicting daily life in nineteenth century Switzerland from the collection of Reverend Frederick S. Weiser, Class of 1957.

Literature of the Telescope – Browse 400 years of books about the telescope, and check out a replica of Galileo’s first modern telescope, all from the collection of Professor Larry Marschall.

11 Days in Asia – Photographs of Gettysburg College Students from China, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, India, and the Philippines.

Images of Italy – A photography exhibit by Professor Dan DeNicola, party of the Library’s “Hidden Talents” series highlighting the artistic talents of the Gettysburg College community. Located in the Browsing Room.

Buddhism in the Modern World: Quest for Social and Religious Identity in Southwest China – Photographs by Professor Deborah Sommer. Located in the Apse.

In the Main Stairwell you will find:

Rediscovering My Country – Images of Kathmandu by Anukul Gurung, Class of 2009, documenting the dramatic rise in poverty and homelessness in his native Nepal.

Summertime Reference

The semester is officially over and the Musselman Library Reference Desk is closed ... but that doesn't mean reference librarians aren't still here, ready and available to assist with your research!

If you would like to consult with a librarian, feel free to contact us using the Ask a Reference Librarian web form - one of us will respond to you during business hours. If you need help after hours, try using the Ask Here PA 24/7 reference service - friendly librarians from other colleges and universities are standing by ready to help.

If you're in town, Musselman Library is generally open 8:00-4:30 on weekdays during the summer. Ask for a reference librarian at the main desk, or visit us in suite 102 on the main floor - someone is bound to be around on most days. The Library is open additional hours for special occasions (like Alumni Weekend) - check the official calendar to find out if we're open on weekends.

Have a great summer. We'll see you again when classes resume on August 31, 2009!

Finals aren’t over yet, but the library staff know that you’re dreaming about the summer. Many of you will be busy during the break with jobs, internships, travel, and catching up with friends and family. However, that doesn’t mean you should give up books! You wouldn’t want your mind to turn to mush, right?

Books and films have been selected by faculty, staff, and your fellow students, so you know they’ve got to be good.

Finals Hours and Study Break

Finals are almost here! The library is getting busier and students are hard at work throughout the library. Musselman Library will be trying to help ease finals anxiety by extending hours and holding a finals study break.

Research Help - 911!!

The semester may be coming to a close, but we know students are just gearing up for end-of-year papers and exams. Here are some quick survival tips!

Need help with your research during the wee hours of the night? Musselman Library now has access to "Ask Here PA," a state-wide reference service that provides users with access to a librarian 24/7. What does this mean for you? It's simple! If you have a burning research question when the reference desk is not staffed (10:00pm-9:00am), simply connect to Ask Here PA from the "Ask a Librarian" link off the library website and a helpful librarian from somewhere in the region or across the country who is staffing the 24 hour service will be able to help.

Citations, citations, citations! If you need help formatting citations for a paper, check out the Musselman Library "Citation Guide." This guide provides helpful links to several online citation manuals for commonly used styles (MLA, Turabian, APA, etc.). Students also love using SourceAid which builds citations for you. Give it a try!

It’s National Library Week!

That’s right, April 12 – 19 is a week designated specifically to celebrate libraries and all they have to offer! Stop by Musselman Library to check out the display behind the reference desk featuring books, CDs and DVDs that relate to this year’s National Library Week theme: Worlds Connect at Your Library. Captain Picard will also be on hand with a few new facts about the library every day.

We will continue our observance of National Library Week with a Cake Break on Thursday, April 16 at 3:00pm. Everyone is invited to take a break, relax and enjoy some cake in the library.

Read/Meet Bill McKibben

The final two events of the Read Green environmental series involve Bill McKibben and his work. Join us for a discussion of Deep Economy, facilitated by Environmental Studies professor Randy Wilson, tonight at 7:00 pm (Penn Hall Lyceum). Then, plan to attend a public talk by Bill McKibben himself next week on Thursday, April 16, 7:30 pm (College Union Building Ballroom). McKibben wrote his book in 1997, and a lot has happened with the U.S. and global economies since then. How does it affect you, and what can you do to help? This is a talk you won't want to miss!

For those of you who dream of working in a library, now you can pretend you do! The library has recently installed a self-checkout machine that will allow you to check out books on your own without having to wait in line. Grab a library book, your ID card, and you’re ready to begin checking out books as fast and furiously as you can. It’s easy and convenient, and if you have problems, you can still get help from the friendly folks over at the Circulation Desk. Note that it can only be used for book check out; DVDs, videos, and CDs still need to be checked to you by a human at the Circ Desk.

The machine is located in the lobby of the library, right near the Circulation and Reference Desks. It looks like something out of Star Trek—very space age. Check it out! (Excuse the pun.)

Images of Italy

Come take in the breathtaking views of Italy in Musselman Library's Browsing Room! This semester's featured "Hidden Talents" exhibit includes striking photographs of a sojourn in Italy by Dan DeNicola, professor of philosophy.

When DeNicola first traveled to Italy in 2006, he found "a photographer's dream." In both his first trip to Tuscany and Umbria and his second to Venice, the Dolomites, the "Northern Arc," and Lake Como, he "loved the diverse landscapes with marvelous colors and wondrous light."

Colorful and vibrant, the exhibit includes images of water taxis and gondolas, richly painted homes and climbing wisteria, and gorgeous vistas. When asked why he selected these particular photographs, DeNicola explains that these pictures "invite the viewer to enter into the landscape, to become the subject, to stay awhile, to take an Italian sabbatical."

How can one refuse? Come take your sabbatical in the library's main floor browsing room. The exhibit will be on display through the summer.

Make a date with a librarian!

This time of year, research really begins to heat up. For anyone who is feeling discouraged or has been searching everywhere and can’t find the information needed for a project, a Research Appointment with a librarian can be very helpful.

Scheduling an appointment is easy – all you have to do is fill out a form on our website and submit your request (go to http://www.gettysburg.edu/library/services/forms/rpc_request.dot). On the form, tell us about your project and what you have accomplished so far. We will contact you to schedule a meeting at a time that is convenient for you. Usually, we need at least 48 hours advanced noticed. Not that we like keeping you waiting, but we need time to prepare so we can provide you with the best possible service! Depending on the complexity of your research question and your experience, the meeting might last from 15-60 minutes.

Of course, if you’re also welcome to drop by the reference desk, e-mail us, or chat with a librarian using your instant messenger account. We even offer 24/7 help through AskHerePA, a service that allows you to get help from librarians in other parts of the country when we’re not available (yes, even at 2:00 a.m.!)

Read Green - we're just getting started!

Read Green: A Gettysburg Environmental Series is in full swing! This semester, the Library is sponsoring a series of three book discussions (facilitated by local subject specialists), two film screenings (introduced by an environmental film expert), and one lecture by environmental activist author Bill McKibben.

Our February 3 discussion of Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle was attended by 75 enthusiastic readers. People yearn to talk about food - the industrial food system, local alternatives, how to grow food, where to acquire it... Audrey Hess, coordinator of the Adams County Local Foods Network, and Elaine Lemmon, founder of Everblossom Farm, facilitated this discussion.

A few weeks later, an even larger crowd gathered to hear Salma Monani (Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies) introduce King Corn and watch the film. A lively discussion followed the show.

Tonight, we'll gather to discuss Elizabeth Kolbert's Field Notes from a Catastrophe, a book about climate change. Environmental Studies professors Rutherford (Rud) Platt and Sarah Principato will guide us through this material.

Film Studies students Anskar Fosse, ’11, and Patricia Veasey, ’11, created a documentary about Musselman Library’s book cart drill team for their final project in FILM 220. Running time is 15 minutes. Q&A with the directors will follow.

As this is a serious film event, there will be popcorn.

By now, you've probably noticed the shiny new recycling bins here at Musselman Library. You'll see the same set of three bins at nine locations around the building. Please sort your trash and recycling properly, so we can improve the overall recycling rate in our library. If recycling bins are contaminated with trash, the whole bag goes into the trash truck. There is no human sorting of our waste after you toss it into a bin!

Cans and bottles - we recycle #1 and #2 plastic (NOT the other numbers!), glass, and aluminum. Lids are okay. Please empty all containers.

Paper - we recycle office paper, newspaper, and glossy inserts. Colored paper is okay.

Waste - anything that doesn't fit in the other bins goes here. This includes plastic cups from the Bullethole and plastic containers marked #1 and #2 that are not bottles.

Reminder - don't throw used batteries away! Drop them into the bin in the CUB (near the mail window). We will have a battery recycling bin here in the library soon, as well.

Finals study break returns!

Anxiety is on the rise in the library as finals approach—you can almost smell it in the air! Computers are packed, chairs are full, groups of students huddle around laptops.

If you need a reprieve from the intensity of finals week, the library will be serving up cookies and fun at the annual holiday study break. Nibble on cupcakes, play games, and even better, get creative and participate in the 2nd annual “Trick My Book Truck” competition.

Last year, five junky old book trucks were transformed into works of art during this finals week de-stress-fest. (Check out some of the more wonderful creations that emerged from the event!)

If you are interested in participating or just want to kick back, relax, and sip a hot cocoa in the library for a few minutes, come by and visit.

When: Monday, December 15 (the first Monday of finals!) from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Where: Room 18 on the ground floor of the library.

Food and beverages will be served until our supply is depleted!

A Reading for Lincoln

Join us for the final Notes at Noon concert of the fall semester! On Tuesday, November 18th Musselman Library presents a special dramatic and musical tribute to Lincoln, as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration. Richard Sautter will appear as James Murdoch, one of the most well-known actors in mid-19th century America. During the Civil War, Murdoch gave benefit readings in order to raise money for soldiers and also performed for Lincoln and other members of his administration.

In addition to Sautter’s dramatic reading, traditional music will be presented by the local group Tin Kettle. So, bring your lunch and a friend to the Library Apse at noon on the 18th, for a one-of-a-kind performance.

For those of you who cannot make it to the lunchtime concert, there will be a second performance Tuesday night in the Majestic Theatre (Cinema 1) at 8:00pm. The evening performance is co-sponsored by the Friends of Musselman Library, Adams County Library System, The Sunderman Conservatory of Music and Civil War Era Studies. Both events are free and open to the public.
